• Old roads and even older friends. Riding in Kent FulGaz

Discover the magic of riding in Kent

If you’re reading this and you’re a fan of FulGaz, it’s because FulGaz is the closest thing you can find to going out for great rides in amazing places. As you may know, FulGaz is based in Melbourne, Australia. Something that you won’t know is the place that sparked my personal love of riding is half a world away in the English county of Kent. Why? Despite only being an hour from central London, you can find countless roads that are almost free of cars but crammed full of the sort of varied terrain that always challenges you.

These are the roads I grew up on, there’s so many of them that it’s possible to almost never do exactly the same ride twice. I recently got the chance to ride on these ancient roads and rekindle some equally ancient friendships at the same time. (I’m the guy in the white helmet). This remined me just how good these roads are for riding.

These rides translate really well to the world of FulGaz because everything is on a small scale. There’s no mountain climbs or three hour transitions between points of interest, it’s all short, and sometimes surprisingly sharp changes in gradient or direction. Throw in some medieval landmarks and even some Roman relics and you’ve also got an interesting bit of truly english sightseeing to keep you occupied too. Just try not to use your brakes when you see a car approaching!

Here’s the full list of current FulGaz rides in Kent. Expect a lot more in the future including some great road race circuits. Find out more about the rides in the FulGaz App or search for them on the FulGaz rides page by selecting the UK as the country.

Indoor cycling training video of Kentish Warmup

Kentish Warmup

A gently steepening ramp that makes the perfect twenty minute warmup. Filmed in the quiet and picturesque Knatts Valley, this is a great little session on it’s own, or an ideal warmup before something more intense.

Cotman’s Ash Lane

Most people drive past this road and don’t even know it exists. This makes it perfect for riding. It’s not very long, but the consistently steep gradient means it packs quite a punch. This ride has been filmed in a loop that includes the descent so you can put FulGaz in lap mode and do a hill repeat session of wahtever duration you want. Your Strava overall distance and elevation gain will be correct.

Indoor cycling training video of Ocean Lake Triathlon

Ocean Lake Triathlon

Fantastic, flat and super quick bike section of the Sprint distance triathlon based Leybourne. By sheer coincidence perhaps, almost exactly the same course was used for time trials for almost 20 years. I’ve got some painful but satisfying memories of going up and down that road so hard I could hardly see straight. In the English Cycling club tradition this was followed by dinner in the pub.

Indoor cycling training video of English Country Lanes

English Country Lanes

This was the first ride to be added to FulGaz. It’s an almost non-stop rollercoaster with some short but brutally steep climbs. The first 15 minutes was my extended loop to school.

Indoor cycling training video of Exedown loop

Exedown loop

A great hilly session, including the iconic Exedown hill. It’s not as hard as many climbs in FulGaz, and certainly one of the shorter challenges. However, it’s been used in quite a few races and the lengths many riders will do to avoid it is the stuff of legend. For a longer ride, try lap mode and do two or more laps. Because the ride starts and finishes in exactly the same place the distance and elevation gain in Strava will be correct.

Hever Castle Olympic Distance Tri

The UK’s second largest triathlon – Hever Castle. That’s right it starts and finishes in the grounds of a castle! This ride goes through some great roads. and if you look closely, passes many historical landmarks.

Indoor cycling training video of Kentish Cruise

Kentish Cruise

The longest of the Kentish rides, this is a slight variation on a personal favourite when I was looking for some decent form. If I could do a fast, strong ride all the way round I was ready to take on anyone. For a longer ride, try lap mode and do two or more laps. Because the ride starts and finishes in exactly the same place the distance and elevation gain in Strava will be correct.

Indoor cycling training video of Kentish Killer - Ide Hill to Otford

Kentish Killer – Ide Hill to Otford

Part of the aptly named Kentish Killer Sportif. This section starts out pretty easy, but has it’s moments later on as it climbs back up the ironically named (for cyclists) South Downs.

Indoor cycling training video of Ronde Van Whitehead

Ronde Van Whitehead

Named after Ian Whitehead, who discovered it, and affectionately called the Ronde Van Whitehead. This is a selection of short, often steep climbs on tiny country lanes. Fantastic interval or climbing strength work.

Who needs FulGaz when you’ve got the real thing!
Actually, it’s a bit nippy out there. Maybe I’ll just have a go at that warm up first.
