2018 FulGaz World Tour Race 1 – The Great Aussie Bike Race

Welcome to the first race of the FulGaz 2018 World Tour. We’ve got some great stages for you, including one specially filmed by 2004 race winner Pat Jonker.

Just like the real tour, you can aim for individual stage glory and see how well you can do overall as well. The stages are short so you can ride each one as many times as you like over a two day period. Only your fastest time counts for overall honours.

There are four stages to complete. The terrain varies from completely flat to a small mountain so there’s something to suit everyone. Each one is available for two days in the competition section of FulGaz. Your time is then instantly displayed on a special FulGaz leaderboard.

Stage 1 – Movistar Ride To Port Adelaide

A day for the “non-climbers” This stage is flat. This ride from Glenelg to Port Adelaide is usually ridden by all the teams on the Monday before the race starts (which is when it was filmed). This year the race returns to Port Adelaide for the first time in 20 years.

Start: 1PM Sun AEST, 2PM Sun GMT, 6PM Sat PST
Finish: 1PM Tue AEST, 2PM Tue GMT, 6PM Mon PST

Stage 2 – Stirling Loop

Starting and finishing in he leafy Adelaide suburb of Stirling, this loop is ridden three times in a famous Australian bike race. It starts fast, but the second half features two solid climbs. This has been filmed specially by 2004 race winner Pat Jonker, so if you can’t stay with his pace, you’ve got a good excuse.

Start: 1PM Tue AEST, 2PM Tue GMT, 6PM Mon PST
Finish: 1PM Thur AEST, 2PM Thur GMT, 6PM Wed PST

Stage 3 – Mt Lofty

The toughest climb of our Challenge this year. Warm up first because the first few minutes are some of the steepest parts of the climb. This is a shorter version than the “old” Mt Lofty climb, featuring the main road section and not the final ride across to the summit. It’s still long enough to hurt though!

Start: 1PM Thur AEST, 2PM Thur GMT, 6PM Wed PST
Finish: 1PM Sat AEST, 2PM Sat GMT, 6PM Fri PST

Stage 4 – Old Willunga Hill

The most iconic and popular climb in the race. The crowds up here can rival any Tour de France mountain stage. This climb is nowhere as big as an alpine climb, but you’re about to find out why it blows the race to bits.

Start: 1PM Sat AEST, 2PM Sat GMT, 6PM Fri PST
Finish: 1PM Mon AEST, 2PM Mon GMT, 6PM Sun PST

Competition details and rules

  • Each ride will appear in the competition section of FulGaz for 48 hours only
  • Only the version of the ride in the Competition section counts. Do not save it to your favourites and ride it from there
  • When you finish each stage your time will instantly be added to a leaderboard that only includes FulGaz times (no times from other apps)
  • Leaderboard results can be sorted by gender so you can see separate men’s and women’s results
  • The overall classification will be published after each stage closes
  • Only your fastest time for each stage counts
  • The overall classification is calculated by hand. We know you’re keen, but please be patient
  • To prevent deliberate and accidental cheating, Competition rides override all your usual settings, even calculating your aerodynamic drag based on your body mass. If you really feel the need to lie about your weight, we recommend an app beginning with Z
  • There are no prizes for this event, only glory. Expect some great prizes as the World tour continues through the year
  • Since you’ve made it this far, we’ll let you into a secret. The next round of the FulGaz World Tour is the Tour of California
